Gifts of Personal Property
How It Works
Please contact Lawrence DelPilar, director of individual and planned giving, to discuss a proposed donation of personal property, including artwork, antiques, or books.
If you intend to donate a work of art, the following information will be needed for curatorial review.
- Title of artwork
- Artist name
- Provenance information (history and documentation of ownership)
- Photograph of proposed donation.
- For select situations, we may consider special arrangements to digitally photograph artwork if the donor resides in the Chicago metropolitan area.
Benefits
- You receive gift credit and an immediate income tax deduction for the appraised value of your gift and pay no capital-gains tax, so long as the gift is used by the Art Institute of Chicago to carry out its mission.
- In certain cases, you can use personal property to fund a life-income gift that provides you with income now and benefits the Art Institute of Chicago.
- You have the satisfaction of making a significant gift now to the Art Institute of Chicago without adversely affecting your cash flow.
